They don't make them like they used to. When I took delivery of this classic beauty, the delivery captain stepped on to the dock and told me: you could sail that boat anywhere in the world and you'd be fine. He was clearly impressed.
Tien was the tenth Rebel 41 built (tien is the Dutch word for ten). She was designed by E.G. van de Stadt, a prolific Dutch yacht designer. There are over 400 different van de Stadt designs and 25,000 of his boats on the water today. Van de Stadt participated in the development of the IOR rules for offshore racing, but he later resigned from the International Technical Committee because he felt that the rules were fostering a less than seaworthy type of yacht. He was a yacht designer that knew how to build an ocean going yacht.
The Rebel 41 was ahead of its time, built in the early days of solid layup fiberglass and fitted with a fin keel and balanced rudder for better sailing performance. She also has the original furling boom from 1968! She's currently rigged for flaking the sail over the boom but I've been tempted to try and get the furling boom working again.
A look through the photo gallery of the boat out of the water will reveal the beautiful lines that are rarely seen in todays designs.
There are many design features that make this a great boat. She's a stout sloop or cutter rig, has a split, well-protected cockpit, numerous sea berth options, a spacious navigation station, and an open cabin with a separate forward master cabin. I personally like how accessible the cabin is from the cockpit. Instead of a ladder there are 3 wide steps that make it easier and safer to enter and exit.
This is a vessel that would be comfortable on an ocean passage and an equally pleasant refuge when anchored in your favorite bay.
In summary here is an opportunity to purchase a quality boat that is capable of taking you anywhere. If you appreciate traditional design and a sea sensible approach to the compromises involved in boat design then you should not miss this one. Please email for additional information. |
