The Soverel 28 was designed for open ocean racing and has proven almost unbeatable when sailed by experienced competitors. The large cockpit seats eight for weekend sailing or provides ample room for a crack racing crew. With today’s boats primarily all fiberglass and metal, it is truly refreshing to see this classic boat with teak and mahogany trim and working parts. Rub rails, combing, cleats, hatches, companionway, screens, interior trim, folding table, chart table, head door and vanity, galley and cabin sole - all beautiful varnished teak and mahogany.
Not being racers, we found the SOVEREL 28 the ultimate day sailor with comfortable seating for 6/8, easily handled by 2 (I have single handed), safe and stable: when the rail is down, she goes no further. The centerboard is seldom used, only to diminish drift for longer tacks and sails well with the board up. Her huge cockpit is self-bailing and has never taken solid water. Her shoal draft makes her a great gunkholer. The accommodations are ample for a couple, but we have cruised with more. She is fun to sail and is at her best to windward. The closer to windward, the faster she will go. However, it is more fun to cruise. |
