ARKADIA , Herreshoff Design No. 85 known as Marco Polo, was constructed almost exactly as per the plans published in Sensible Cruising Design by the International Marine Publishing Co. in 1973. A full set of plans are available at the library of the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut but it was possible to construct the various designs straight from the book. (See brief description below by Don Holm.) As she was originally designed in 1945 there had been huge advances in engine design between then and 1979 when she was built in terms of both efficiency and size which allowed for the placing further aft of the engine and tanks (which Herreshoff allowed for) and the creation of a main saloon in the center of the boat where he had originally placed the large engine and tanks. Contrary to Herreshoff's beliefs a manual head was also installed forward. The only other major change was the installation of heavy bronze portlights in the place of the sliding wood and glass design he had allowed for. (Complete description available from owner)
