SV Side by is auxiliary aft-cockpit sailing vessel (double-ender) with sloop sail-plan designed by Mr. John Holland and built by Mr. Bob Lange of Port Townsend, Washington - USA. Mr. Lange is connected with Mr. Cecil M. Lange of Cape George auxiliary cutter fame a well known and respected off-shore cruising vessel. Side by Side is a one-off and was built by Mr. Lange as a pre-production version of an auxiliary sloop he intended to bring to market.
The robust hull shell is of layered cold molded yellow cedar encapsulated with a fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) exterior shell to provide a water tight and abrasion resistant envelope. The vessel is structurally framed with prime grade woods including vertical grain (VG) fir longitudinal and transverse members. The balance of the vessel is comprised of epoxy saturated marine grade wood coachroof weather decks with silicon bronze fastenings (builders specifications). Laminated VG fir is used for the coachroof beams and hull frames in the way of the ballast keel well secured by (5/8 bronze keel bolts). The vessel carries a stepped 6,200 pound cast lead ballast keel.
The extruded aluminum alloy mast is securely keel-stepped and features stainless steel rod shrouds, single aluminum spreaders with fabricated spar sockets. Stainless steel head stay with Furlex roller furling and single stainless steel rod back stay. Deck equipment consists of quality Lewmar winches plus ground-tackle.
Most forward in the forepeak is the chain locker followed aft by a sleeping berth. Convertible dinette - settee are found amidships with the galley set to port with marine toilet bathing compartment athwartships on the starboard quarter. The self-bailing elliptically-shaped cockpit. |
